Wireless earbuds and headphones: what actually matters before you buy

Wireless audio is one of the most crowded categories in Bahrain's shops, with prices from a few dinars to well over a hundred. The expensive models are genuinely better in specific ways — and whether those ways matter depends on where and how you listen.
Earbuds or over-ear?
Earbuds are pocketable and suit commuting, the gym and calls. Over-ear headphones are more comfortable for long sessions, usually have longer battery life, and give the strongest noise cancelling — ideal for flights and open-plan offices. In Bahrain's heat, over-ear pads can get warm outdoors, which is worth considering if you walk a lot.
Noise cancelling and fit
Active noise cancelling (ANC) is most effective against constant low sounds — aircraft engines, AC units, traffic. It is less effective against voices. Premium models from Sony, Bose and Apple are clearly ahead here, and the difference is obvious on a flight.
Fit matters as much as electronics. Earbuds that don't seal properly leak bass and weaken noise cancelling. Try the different ear-tip sizes in the box before deciding a pair doesn't suit you.
Matching your phone
iPhones use the AAC Bluetooth codec, and AirPods add features such as automatic switching between Apple devices and easy pairing. Android phones support AAC too, and many also support higher-bitrate codecs such as LDAC or aptX; brands like Sony and Samsung add their own features on their own phones.
Multipoint — being connected to a phone and a laptop at the same time — is very useful if you take calls on both. Check that the exact model supports it.
Battery, water resistance and value
Look at battery life with noise cancelling switched on, since that's how you'll use it. For the gym, an IPX4 rating or higher protects against sweat.
Previous-generation flagships are often excellent value once their successor launches — the older model frequently drops in price while still outperforming new mid-range pairs. Compare the generation in each listing carefully, since names change only slightly between versions.
