Cordless stick or robot?

A cordless stick vacuum is the better primary cleaner: it reaches corners, sofas, stairs and car interiors, and handles a quick daily pass across tiled floors. A robot vacuum is best as a maintenance cleaner that keeps dust under control between manual cleans — it won't do stairs or furniture, but running it daily makes a visible difference to fine dust.

Many households end up with both. If you can only buy one, a good cordless stick covers more situations.

What matters for fine dust and sand

Filtration matters as much as suction. Fine dust passes straight through weak filters and back into the room, so look for sealed systems with HEPA-grade filters, and check whether filters are washable or need replacing.

Sand is heavy and abrasive. On hard floors, a soft roller head collects it without scattering; on rugs, a motorised brush bar is needed. Many stick vacuums include both heads — compare the accessories included, not just the base price.

Bin size decides how often you empty it. Dust fills a small bin quickly, so a larger bin, or a robot with a self-emptying base, saves effort.

Robot features worth paying for

Lidar or camera-based navigation cleans in efficient rows and lets you set no-go zones in the app; basic bump-and-turn robots wander and miss areas in large homes. Mopping is useful on tiles and marble, especially on models that lift the mop pad when they reach a rug.

Self-emptying and self-washing bases add a lot to the price but reduce weekly maintenance. They make most sense for large homes or when the robot runs every day.

Batteries and running costs

Advertised runtimes are usually measured at the lowest power setting. Expect considerably less on the strongest mode, which is the one you'll use on rugs. Models with swappable batteries let you extend a cleaning session or replace a worn battery later.

Before buying, check that replacement filters, brushes, mop pads and dust bags are sold locally. Consumables that have to be imported can cost more over a few years than the price difference between two models.
